C astlefield Forum took part in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) North West In Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards once again in 2017.

The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ campaign has been designed to provide an opportunity to smaller community groups to get involved in the wider Britain in Bloom initiative. It’s a unique scheme for volunteer-led community gardening groups which are focused on cleaning up and greening up their local area. Groups participating in the campaign are asked to focus on its three core pillars of:

  • community participation
  • environmental responsibility
  • gardening achievement

Awards are made from Level 1, ‘Improving’ up to Level 5, ‘Outstanding’. Over previous years we’ve successfully achieved Level 4 on one occasion and Level 5 on five occasions.

This year, for the second time, we entered Friends of the Roman Gardens as a separate entry. Although the Gardens are still ‘work in progress’ we’ve been really pleased with the efforts made in keeping them clean & tidy whilst working up the delivery of the Masterplan, and finally obtaining planning permission after the successful Crowdfunding campaign. The RHS awarded Level 4 ‘Thriving’ to the Roman Gardens, one level higher than last year.

We’re absolutely delighted that Castlefield as a whole achieved Level 5 ‘Outstanding’ once again for 2017. This is a great combined achievement for everyone involved:

  • the Gardening Action Group
  • Friends of the Roman Gardens
  • Castlefield Estates
  • Forum volunteers too many to name individually
  • Olliers Solicitors whose staff have spent regular Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) time in the Roman Gardens and
  • Auto Trader staff who, again through CSR, spent a very wet day with us all around Castlefield helping with a major tidy up in August.
  • Skanska (Ordsall Chord construction) who donated bulbs and helped with planting in the Roman Gardens & moved grow boxes for us.

We also appreciate Officers from the Council who have advised and supported us and the Oxnoble, Barca, Dukes 92 and the White Lion who have provided welcome liquid refreshment to thirsty gardeners after their busy sessions on site. Teamwork Indeed!
